Twitter outgrows pure Rails — without declaring Rails dead
Years of JVM/Scala investment alongside Ruby; Fail Whale era ops pain, not a total rewrite bill
What happened
Twitter became the cautionary tale for Ruby on Rails at hyperscale. The Fail Whale was real. So was the response: selective extraction of hot paths, JVM services, and later JVM-first culture — while plenty of product surface stayed dynamic and shipped.
Failure mode
Confusing "this stack at our scale needs help" with "this stack is a fad." Twitter's pain was growth curves and ops maturity, not Rails syntax. The failure mode for the industry was lazy generalization: every startup got lectured to skip Rails because Twitter had queues.
Lesson
Mutated, not martyred. Rails did not "lose"; it stopped being the whole answer at one extreme outlier. The lesson is extract bottlenecks with metrics, not rewrite your identity because a bird site got famous.
